Richard D. Goodding Sr., of Shiloh Camp No. 2, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War passed away on August 3, 2017.
Richard was born January 10, 1920 in Lincoln, NE, went home to be with the Lord on August 3, 2017. He was a long time believer in Jesus Christ and member of Indian Hills Community Church. Goodding was Nebraska Farm Bureau Federation Legislative Director and Vice President for Public Affairs. As Legislative Director, he worked with many organizations to modernize Nebraska’s system of taxation. In 1967, the Nebraska State Legislature adopted state sales and income taxes to replace the state’s tax on real property. He retired in 1985 after 30 years of servic
e. In 1990, Goodding was honored by Farm Bureau with the Silver Eagle Award, recognizing his “outstanding leadership and distinguished service” to Nebraska Agriculture; In 1999 the University of Nebraska Alumni Association recognized him for ”Outstanding Achievement in the Field of Agriculture.”
He earned the rank of Eagle Scout, Boy Scouts of America; was a graduate of Jackson High school, in 1938, and the University of Nebraska in 1942 with a B.S. degree and a 2nd Lt. Commission thru ROTC. His WW ll service was completed in the Pacific theater, Okinawa, where he earned the rank of Captain ; He lived and farmed near Ithaca, NE from 1948 to 1993 and was a Scout Master; During retirement grandpa Goodding enjoyed his grandchildren’s activities, raising dahlia’s to give away, and researching family genealogy. Dad was a watchful prayer warrior for his many family members and friends. All who knew him were blessed by his dignity and grace, and the love of Jesus.
Survivors include his sons Richard (Amy), Lincoln; James (Jeanette), Ceresco; Gary (Carol), Lincoln; and John (Cindy), Longview, TX; ten grandchildren and nineteen great grandchildren; and sister Barbra Bell, Sun Lakes, AZ. Preceded in death by Mildred, his wife of 54 years, his parents Dr. T.H. and Laura Goodding, a brother George V. Goodding killed in action in WW ll, and brother John.
Memorial service will be Friday, August 11 at 10:30 am, north chapel of Indian Hill Community Church, 1000 S. 84th St. Lincoln, NE. Interment will be private. Memorials to Goodding Learning Center, UNL Agronomy Dept. or Bended Knee International. Arrangements by Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home.
