Brother Richard Vitters from Welstead Camp No.3 passed away on February 3, 2018 at the age of 82. Brother Vitters was a charter member of Welstead Camp No. 3 and served as their first Camp Commander, serving two terms. He was the Secretary-Treasurer for the past several years.
Richard was born July 8, 1935, in Huron, South Dakota, to Herb and Hazel (Abbott) Vitters, the oldest of nine children. After graduating from Wessington, South Dakota High School, he enlisted in the United States Air Force. He served in Japan and Korea. Following his military service, he began his academic career. He attended various colleges in South Dakota, and graduated with his Doctorate ED.D in Curriculumnstruction at Illinois State University in Normal, Illinois. Richard was a member of First Lutheran Church, the Cosmos Club, Civil War Round Table, Sons of the Union Veterans of the Civil War, and Midland Bridge Group. On April 10, 1976, he was married to Judy Sullivan and she survives, along with her children, Gregory (Marilyn) Sullivan, Spokane, Washington, Anne (Ted) DeBord, Fremont, Kathryn (Shane) Isham, Coal City, Illinois, Eric (Stacey) Sullivan, Seguin, Texas; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Richard is also survived by brothers, Donald, Wayne, Albert, David, Clifford and John; and sister, Marles. A brother, Jerry, preceded him.

The Department of Nebraska, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War will hold a short memorial for Richard at their State Encampment on April 14, 2018.
