Abraham Lincoln Birthday Celebration
February 8, 2018 @ 12:00 PM - 3:00 PM
The public is invited to a free patriotic concert by the Lincoln Municipal Band the evening of Thursday, February 8 at Lincoln Southwest High School. The concert is part of the 18th annual Abraham Lincoln Birthday Celebration. Activities will begin at 6 p.m. at the school, 7001 South 14th Street, and the concert will begin at 7:30 p.m.
The 33-member Lincoln Municipal Band is Nebraska’s only professional wind ensemble and the State’s oldest professional music organization. Since 1907, the Band has presented a free summer concert series, which continue to be the most popular events of the Lincoln Parks and Recreation Department’s summer performance series.
“Lincoln Municipal Band concerts and the Abraham Lincoln Birthday Celebration are great traditions in the Capital City and it’s exciting to combine them for a fun family evening,” said Mayor Chris Beutler. “I want to thank the sponsors of this event for allowing us to provide this free concert at no expense to the City.”
Major support for the event is being provided by Cornhusker Bank, Nelnet, Humanities Nebraska and other local individuals, businesses and organizations.
Activities before and after the concert will include historical displays, free birthday cake and live music from Chris Sayre, who has performed at all 17 previous celebrations. Area Civil
War re-enactors will visit with those attending. Exhibitors include the Homestead National Monument of America in Beatrice and Susan Dittman of Lincoln, the author of “Abraham Lincoln’s Shining Star: The Inspirational Story of Abraham Lincoln and Nebraska.”
