Last Union Soldier – Seward County Dedication

The Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, Department of Nebraska, Shiloh Camp No. 2 will conduct a ceremony honoring Hiram Hunkins, the Last Union Civil War Soldier buried in Seward County, Nebraska. The ceremony will be held at Leland Cemetery, near Cordova. Descendants of this soldier will be in attendance.
Hiram Hunkins was a Private in Co. K, 48th Wisconsin Infantry and died March 4, 1947 at the age of 102. He was the last Union Veteran living in Wyoming.

The Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, Dept. of Nebraska have started the final phase in our Last Soldier Project. The purpose of the project is to locate and appropriately mark the final resting place of the last Union Civil War Soldier buried in each county in the state of Nebraska. We are marking the graves of these veterans with a bronze star marker and QR code medallion. The full list of veterans can be viewed here.
