Last Union Soldier – Polk. Co. Dedication

The Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, Department of Nebraska, Welstead Camp No. 3 will conduct a ceremony honoring William H. Fetters, the Last Union Civil War Soldier buried in Polk County, Nebraska. The ceremony will be held at Stromsburg Cemetery, in Stromsburg. Descendants of this soldier will be in attendance and the local American Legion will provide the firing squad.
There will be a free will donation community meal at 5:30 pm. And the First Nebraska Volunteers Brass Band will perform patriotic tunes at 6:00 pm in a free concert at the downtown bandstand.
William H. Fetters was a Private in Co. B, 30th Indiana Infantry and died May 19, 1947 at the age of 102. He was one of the last two Union Veterans living in Nebraska.

The Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, Dept. of Nebraska have started the final phase in our Last Soldier Project. The purpose of the project is to locate and appropriately mark the final resting place of the last Union Civil War Soldier buried in each county in the state of Nebraska. We are marking the graves of these veterans with a bronze star marker and QR code medallion. The full list of veterans can be viewed here.
