Nebraska Statehood Day – Flag Raising
March 1, 2017 @ 3:00 AM - 4:00 AM
Nebraska Statehood Day – Celebrating 150 Years
The Department of Nebraska Sons of Union Veterans (in period uniform) will hoist the colors (37-star flag) on a newly-installed flag pole at the Thomas P. Kennard State Historic Site to open the ceremonies for Nebraska Statehood Day. The house will be open to the public for tours, free of charge, until 4 p.m.
The house built by Nebraska’s first secretary of state, Thomas Kennard, was constructed in 1869 at a time when Lincoln was the fledgling capital of the first state to join the Union after the Civil War. It was designated the Nebraska Statehood Memorial in 1967 in honor of the state’s centennial. For the last fifty years the house has been administered by the Nebraska State Historical Society and interprets both the statehood story and Victorian life on the prairie.
